A common misconception that many people who do not live in New York City have is that the subway is completely underground. This is not the case. Many sections of the system are actually above ground. The very first underground portion of the system was opened in 1904. The oldest portion of the track which is still being used is the BMT Lexington Ave. Line which was first opened in 1885.
Sadly, the most famous New York City building is no longer there. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center use to be the most recognizable structure on the New York skyline. Today the absence of the Twin Towers is always a reminder of how horribly cruel the world can be. It will be a long time before anyone can see the New York City skyline and not feel their heart break a little.
